Tomioka Tessai (1837 - 1924) was a painter and calligrapher in imperial Japan. He is regarded as the last major artist in the Bunjinga tradition and one of the first major artists of the Nihonga style.
This kettle pot fuses round and square shapes together, representing the sky and the land in ancient believes. One side of the body has Tessai's poetry carved on it, and the other side has a tea ceremony set. Tessai's stamp can be found underneath one side of the handle.
