Daikokuten, or the God of Darkness, is a figure evolved from Buddhism and is an equivalent to the Indian Mahākāla. In contrast to its name, this god is considered as the God of Wealth and harvest, and is one of the Seven Lucky Gods in Japanese culture. Daikokuten always holds a treasure bag and a golden cane in his hands and brings prosperity and fortune to families.
This iron kettle pot utilizes the shape of Dailokuten’s treasury bag, full of delicate flowers and patterns that represent prosperity. The mellow and lively shape mimics a treasury bag being tied-up by rope. Illustrating such a soft and rich outline with the heavy and rough iron material creates a stunning visual contrast. The “erosion casting” on the body of the kettle is a rarely seen yet significant decoration that requires outstanding craftsmanship to achieve. The metalwork artist intentionally added imperfection to an exquisite piece as a visual demonstration of the “wabi-sabi” concept.
