Book from the Ground is a new media project undertaken by Xu Bing since 2003, utilizing emojis and signs widely adopted on the internet to create a book that can be understood by everyone, regardless of their educational and cultural background. Through this project, Xu continues to explore the roles language plays in a culture and its knowledge system. Contrary to his famous Book from the Sky (1987 - 1991) that uses “false characters” that no one can understand, Book from the Ground aims to eliminate the obstacles created by language and writing, and realize the universality and inclusiveness of knowledge.

Zheng invited Xu to participate in the First Chinese Art Seminar/Workshop in San Diego in 1991. There Xu created "A, B, C...", the first piece of work after he moved to the United States. In 2007, Xu created the first page of Book from the Ground specially for YISHU magazine as the first limited edition print released by the magazine.
